If you’re interested in horse racing, the historic Saratoga race course opens for 6 weeks of thrilling racing during July and August each year. If you want to test your luck, the Saratoga Casino & Raceway offers top slots, electronic table games and features the excitement of harness racing, as well as delicious restaurants. In Schenectady NY, the Rivers Casino & Resort is part of the Mohawk Harbor project. This area is vibrant mixed-use development with residential, commercial and retail uses, and also features a 124-room hotel, which is in addition to the hotel to be attached to Rivers Casino & Resort.
The area is also home to several professional level and collegiate sports teams. The Tri-City Valleycats, are the Class-A affiliate of the Houston Astros baseball team and play at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium in Troy, NY. The Adirondack Thunder is a professional ice hockey team in the ECHL and is affiliated with the NHL’s Calgary Flames. The Thunder calls the Glens Falls Civic Center in Downtown Glens Falls home.
The Times Union Center is also the home of the Division 1 Men’s Siena College Saints Basketball team. At the State University at Albany, you’ll find the Division 1 Men’s Basketball team, the Great Danes. Union College in Schenectady is home to the Union Dutchmen, a Division 1 men’s ice hockey team, who in 2014, won the NCAA Division I Men’s Ice Hockey Tournament. Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy is home to the RPI Engineers, a Division 1 men’s ice hockey team.
Entertainment & Performing Arts Venues & Theaters
The Capital District area is home to a variety of performing arts venues and historic theaters. In Saratoga Springs, you’ll find the Saratoga Performing Arts Center (also known as SPAC), which hosts a variety of concerts, plays and live events during the summer months. SPAC is also the summer home for the New York City Ballet and also hosts jazz festivals, classical music concerts and many world famous artists and performers.
Schenectady is home to Proctors, a former Vaudeville house and a member of the National Register of Historic Places. Proctors features one of the largest movie screens in the Northeast and frequently hosts famous Broadway shows, musicians and a variety of other performances. The Times Union Center, located in Downtown Albany, as well as the Glens Falls Civic Center in Downtown Glens Falls, host a variety of events from professional sports games to college graduations, live shows, events, concerts and a variety of other performances.
If you’re in the mood for shopping, you’ll find a variety of places to go located throughout the Capital Region. Head to Downtown Saratoga for one of a kind shopping at locally owned and operated boutique stores, you won’t find anywhere else as well as national name brands. You’ll also find a variety of restaurants with cuisine to satisfy even the pickiest eaters.
For a great deal, you can head to the Lake George Outlets, where you’ll find a variety of different outlet stores from famous brand names. One of the biggest malls in the area is Crossgates Mall, which is located near Albany, and you’ll also find shopping malls in Clifton Park, Wilton and Colonie.
