The past year has been tough on everyone, but it’s been especially taxing on senior caregivers. Because COVID-19 posed a greater risk to the elderly population, at-home caregivers across New York State were forced to implement additional health and safety measures to protect their loved ones, and many haven’t had a break in over 12 months. Even in cases where multiple family members previously shared in the caregiving, it often became one person’s sole responsibility this past year, in order to limit the risk of exposure to the virus.
Now, more than ever, caregivers need a break. Maybe you, or a senior caregiver you know, is suffering from burnout – experiencing feelings of hopelessness, overwhelming anxiety, sleep problems, or are having difficulty coping with everyday tasks – or perhaps you just need two weeks off to take that vacation you had to reschedule from last year. Either way, our Respite Care programs in Troy, Cohoes, Slingerlands, Niskayuna, Queensbury and East Greenbush can help.
What is Residential Respite Care?
Our Respite Care programs provide short-term, temporary care for seniors in a secure and welcoming community, and give caregivers a chance to step away from their responsibilities for a brief period to recharge and take a much-needed, and well-deserved, break.
When you choose respite care at any of our Terrace assisted living or memory care communities, your loved one is placed in their own private studio or one-bedroom apartment, while a staff of licensed nurses and resident care assistants provide friendly, personalized care, tailored to each individual’s needs.
Respite care residents have access to all the services available to our long-term assisted living residents, including 24-hour supervision and security, three freshly prepared meals a day, assistance with personal care, medication management, and housekeeping services.

Additional Benefits of Our Residential Respite Care in Upstate NY
While in-home care can be isolating for seniors, residential respite care provides your loved one with the opportunity to interact with others in the community. In addition to socializing with residents in our group dining room, library, landscaped grounds, and other well-appointed common areas, respite care residents are welcome to attend any of the social, cultural, recreational and educational programs offered at our assisted living communities. All of our assisted living communities provide regular transportation services, and some even have indoor pools, putting greens, and full-service beauty salons & barber shops.
Many caregivers are concerned that their loved one won’t like leaving their home for respite care, but we’ve found that even the most reluctant residents adjust well. In fact, many respite care residents become permanent residents. (Read: Making the Transition from Respite Care to Permanent Care)
When Caregiving Becomes Too Much
While a break can help alleviate caregiver stress and burnout, it’s important to remember that respite care isn’t a cure all. If your loved one’s needs have surpassed what you can handle, it may be time to consider other senior care options.
Eddy Senior Living is here to support you in every way we can – whether that means giving you a break for a couple of weeks, or finding a more permanent long-term solution for your aging parent or loved one.
