Established by the National Center for Assisted Living in 1995, National Assisted Living Week® kicks off annually on the first Sunday after Labor Day. Throughout the week, assisted living communities across the country are celebrated. Special events and activities are planned for residents and their loved ones, as well as the staff and volunteers, and many assisted living communities take the opportunity to educate the public about the care and services they provide.
National Assisted Living Week 2019
This year, National Assisted Living Week was observed on September 8-14, and the theme, “A Spark of Creativity”, aimed to inspire both residents and staff to tap into their creative side. Throughout the Eddy Senior Living Terrace Communities, residents were encouraged to try new things, including art therapy.
Working with their hands and engaging their minds, memories and emotions offers many benefits to aging adults, including the potential to improve cognitive and sensory-motor function, cultivate self-esteem and emotional resilience, enhance social skills, and reduce conflicts and distress.
Staff members were also encouraged to “get creative” by offering new and unique ways to improve resident quality of life, and further the Terrace community’s person-centered approach to care.
